to mainly have my remarks about comprehensive immigration reform. as you know i'm a the u.s. senate passed a comprehensive -- as you know, the u.s. senate passed a conference of bill that passed by a majority in the u.s. senate, and now it is up to the u.s. house of representatives. and i believe that this legislation is not perfect. i do not think that any legislation that is a series of compromises that need to be made is perfect, but i also would submit to you that this microphone is provided to you by the democratic national committee. [laughter] so there are a few fundamentals of this issue that i would like to point out. one is that we now have, for better or worse, 11 million people who are residing in this country illegally. many of them have come here recently. the large majority of them have been here for a long time. i do not believe that any of us think we're going going to round up 11 million people and send them back to wherever they came from.
